Looking back to 2018, we revisit a fascinating dialogue held at the Tobu Department Store in Ikebukuro, delving into the roots of Japanese artistry.
The Beauty of Japan, Nestled in Daily Life
We were invited to appear at the “Traditional Crafts Exhibition WAZA 2018.” Under the theme “The Beauty of Japan Nestled in Life,” this event gathered the finest pottery, lacquerware, textiles, and stationery from across the archipelago.
For a calligrapher, tools are not merely objects; they are extensions of the body. Without the craftsman, the artist cannot exist. Chosho Yabe participated in a special talk event and demonstration to explore this symbiotic relationship.
A Dialogue with Master Craftsmen
The session featured a passionate exchange with the guardians of Japan’s “Stationery Treasures”:
- Akama Inkstone (Yamaguchi Pref.): Discussing the friction and texture of the stone that grinds the ink.
- Toyohashi Brush (Aichi Pref.): Exploring the resilience and life within animal bristles.
- Awa Washi (Tokushima Pref.): Celebrating the warmth and absorbency of handmade paper.
Through conversations and live demonstrations, we highlighted how the “soul of the maker” meets the “soul of the user” to create art. We thank everyone who joined us to celebrate the profound depth of Japanese craftsmanship.

2018年のアーカイブより、池袋・東武百貨店にて開催された、日本の手仕事を巡るイベントの記録をご紹介します。
書家と職人、技の競演
全国から選りすぐりの伝統工芸品が集う「伝統工芸品展 WAZA2018」。
「暮らしに寄り添う、ニッポンの美」をテーマにしたこの祭典内のトークイベントに、矢部澄翔が出演いたしました。
書家にとって、筆、墨、紙、硯といった「文房四宝」は、単なる道具ではありません。自分の指先となり、感情を乗せるためのパートナーです。本イベントでは、その道具を生み出す職人の方々と対談し、実演を交えながらその奥深い世界をご紹介しました。
赤間硯、豊橋筆、阿波和紙
ステージでは、各産地を代表する職人の方々と共演。
- 鋒鋩（ほうぼう）の目が命である赤間硯。
- 絶妙な弾力とまとまりを持つ豊橋筆。
- 素朴な風合いと強さを兼ね備えた阿波和紙。
それぞれの道具に込められた職人のこだわりや歴史を伺いながら、実際にその道具を使って揮毫する。
「作る手」と「書く手」が一つになった瞬間、そこに日本の伝統文化の真髄が垣間見えました。ご来場いただいた皆様、そして素晴らしい職人の皆様に感謝いたします。
