Kawagoe Million Lights Summer Festival: The 110m Calligraphy Challenge

Looking back at a physically demanding yet exhilarating challenge in the summer of 2015.

I performed at the “Kawagoe Million Lights Summer Festival” (Kawagoe Hyakumanto Natsu Matsuri) held on the nostalgic Taisho Roman Yume-dori Street.

Breaking My Own Record: Over 100m

I have challenged myself with long-distance calligraphy before—50m in 2008 and 100m in 2009.
For this event, I aimed even higher, attempting a “Over 100m Calligraphy Live” on a massive paper measuring 2 meters wide and 110 meters long.

“Sozo” (Creation) and the Olympic Spirit

Accompanied by the powerful beats of “Kawagoe Fuji Taiko,” I spent an entire hour writing continuously under the summer sky.

I started with a massive character 「創造」 (Sozo – Creation).
Following that, I inscribed a passionate message from Mayor Yoshiaki Kawai of Kawagoe City regarding the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

With Kawagoe’s Kasumigaseki Country Club selected as the venue for the Olympic golf tournament, I poured the city’s anticipation and hot enthusiasm into the brush.

After the event, the main section of the work, featuring the message about the “Olympic Legacy,” was displayed at the “Koedo Kurari” facility.
