We open our archives to present a breathtaking collaboration that bridged literature, textile craftsmanship, and the art of Shodo.
A Triad of Japanese Tradition
Held at the historic Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse (Akarenga Soko), the exhibition “Tsunagu Dento-ten” (Connecting Traditions Exhibition) showcased a unique fusion of three artistic pillars:
- The Words: Haiku and Tanka poetry submitted by talented writers from all across Japan.
- The Canvas: Exquisite Nishijin-ori (traditional Kyoto textile) woven specifically for hanging scrolls.
- The Brush: Chosho Yabe, who brushed the poems directly onto the silk fabric.
100 Scrolls of Silk and Ink
Writing directly onto Nishijin-ori requires an exceptionally high level of skill and focus. The ink interacts with the woven threads differently than paper, demanding precise control to ensure the characters “breathe” within the luxurious texture of the fabric.
Approximately 100 of these collaborative hanging scrolls lined the galleries of the Red Brick Warehouse. The sight of the shimmering silk and the dancing black ink created a forest of words, enveloping visitors in a space where the beauty of the Japanese language met the pinnacle of traditional craftsmanship.
「つなぐ伝統展」― 言の葉を、西陣の絹にのせて。
アーカイブより、横浜の象徴的な歴史的建造物「横浜赤レンガ倉庫」にて開催された、美の競演の記録をご紹介します。
西陣織 × 詩人 × 矢部澄翔
本展「つなぐ伝統展」は、異なる分野の伝統と才能が「掛け軸」という一つの小宇宙の中で融合した画期的な展覧会です。
日本全国の優秀な作家から寄せられた「俳句」や「短歌」などの詩歌作品。それを受け止めるのは、京都が誇る伝統工芸「西陣織」の表装。
矢部澄翔は、この最高級の西陣織の裂地に、詩人の魂である言葉を直接揮毫しました。
100本の掛け軸が織りなす、言葉の森
紙ではなく、凹凸のある織物に文字を書くことは、筆先のコントロールに極めて高度な技術を要します。絹の光沢、織りの質感、そして墨の潤渇。
会場には、約100点にも及ぶコラボレーション掛け軸が一堂に展示されました。
歴史ある赤レンガ倉庫の空間に、現代の歌人の想いと、伝統工芸の粋、そして書の息吹が重なり合う。それはまさに、日本の「伝統（Tradition）」を未来へと「つなぐ」壮大なインスタレーションとなりました。
