Looking back at a heartwarming workshop held at Niiza Municipal Shinbori Elementary School in Saitama.
With the desire to “let children experience something different from regular school penmanship classes,” about 100 students gathered for this special event.
“Michi” (Path) – Collaboration with Wadaiko Club
To start, I performed a calligraphy demonstration accompanied by the energetic shouts and beats of the school’s Wadaiko (Japanese Drum) Club.
Together with the children’s energy, I wrote the character 「道」 (Michi – Path/Way).
Unleashing Creativity with Giant Brushes
In the workshop, children used brushes much larger than usual to write about their “Best Summer Memories.”
It was a time to break free from the strict rules of “Shosha” (penmanship) and enjoy the pure fun of expression.
A Path Lined with “Dream Flowers”
I also asked them to write their “Future Dreams” on flower-shaped paper.
“Don’t give up. If you try, you can do anything.”
To convey this message, we pasted the children’s “Dream Flowers” onto the large “Michi” artwork I had written.
Seeing the “Path” bloom with 100 dreams was a moving sight, representing the infinite potential of the next generation.

埼玉県の新座市立新堀小学校にて開催した、出張ワークショップの記録です。
「学校の書写の授業ではできない体験を」という想いのもと、約100名の子供たちが集まりました。
和太鼓クラブとの共演
オープニングは、同校の和太鼓クラブの子供たちとのコラボレーション。
元気な掛け声と太鼓の音に合わせ、私が揮毫したのは「道」の一文字です。
巨大筆で描く自由な心
ワークショップでは、普段使い慣れない「巨大筆」を使って、自由に表現する楽しさを体験してもらいました。
テーマは「夏休みの思い出」。子供たちのワクワクした表情が印象的でした。
100人の「夢の花」を咲かせる
そして、花びらの形をした紙には「将来の夢」を書いてもらいました。
「諦めずに取り組めば、必ず道は開ける」。
そんなメッセージを込め、私が書いた「道」の作品の上に、子供たちの「夢の花」を貼り付けて一つの大きな作品を完成させました。
子供たちの無限の可能性と、日本の明るい未来を感じる素晴らしい時間となりました。
