Looking back at a memorable autumn day in 2015.
To celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Sister City Agreement between my hometown Kawagoe City and Salem City (Oregon, USA), a commemorative ceremony was held to welcome the delegation from Salem.
A Solemn Performance at Hikawa Shrine
The venue was the historic Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine.
As an introduction to Japanese culture for our guests from overseas, I had the honor of performing a calligraphy demonstration within the sacred precincts of the shrine.
“An-nei” (Peace and Tranquility) in the Rain
On that day, a light rain was falling.
Far from spoiling the event, the drizzle enhanced the quiet, mystical atmosphere unique to a Shinto shrine. The sound of rain and the scent of wet stone created a serene backdrop for the brush.
In this solemn atmosphere, I wrote the characters 「安寧」 (An-nei).
It means “Peace and Tranquility.”
I poured my heart into the ink, wishing for the lasting peace, health, and friendship of the people of both cities.
Performing in the rain at a shrine was a rare and spiritually cleansing experience that I will never forget.

2015年10月16日の活動記録です。
川越市とアメリカ・セーレム市が姉妹都市盟約を交わして30周年を迎えたこの年、セーレム市からの代表団をお招きした記念式典が開催されました。
氷川神社での奉納揮毫
会場は、川越の総鎮守である「川越氷川神社」の境内。
日本文化の紹介として、神聖な空気の中で書道パフォーマンスを披露させていただきました。
小雨の中の「安寧」
この日はあいにくの小雨模様でしたが、それがかえって神社ならではの静寂を深め、非常に幻想的な空間となりました。
雨音だけが響く中、集中を高めて揮毫したのは「安寧」の二文字。
世の中が穏やかで平和であること。
両市の変わらぬ友好と、人々の穏やかな暮らしを願い、心を込めて書き上げました。
雨の降る神社で筆を執るという、稀有で美しい体験をさせていただきました。
